UK photos must be taken within 1 month.
Most countries allow passport photos up to 6 months old. The UK's HMPO Photo Standards v47 (updated September 2025) tightened this to just 1 month - the strictest photo recency rule of any country in the world. If your photo is 5 weeks old on the day you submit your application, it will be rejected.
Light grey or cream -
preferred over white.
This is the most common area where British expats in Australia run into issues. Many have recently had photos taken for Indian, Chinese, Japanese or US applications - all of which use white backgrounds. HMPO specifies light grey or cream as the preferred background. Very bright white backgrounds may not meet their standards and could cause your application to be queried.

Understanding UK British Passport Photo Requirements in Australia
Australia has over 1.2 million British-born residents - one of the largest British diaspora communities in the world. For this community, renewing a British passport while living in Australia has specific challenges, particularly around the photo requirements set by HM Passport Office (HMPO). The requirements differ from Australian passport standards in three important ways that consistently catch British expats off guard.
The most significant change in recent years is the photo recency requirement, tightened from 6 months to just 1 month under HMPO Photo Standards v47 (updated September 2025).gov.uk The UK now has the strictest passport photo recency rule of any country globally - while Australia, China, India, Japan, Korea, and the Philippines all allow photos up to 6 months old, HMPO will query any photo taken more than one calendar month before the application is submitted. For British expats in Australia managing a busy life, this means the photo and the application must happen in close succession.
The background colour requirement is the other area causing consistent problems. HMPO specifies light grey or cream as the preferred background - not pure white.gov.uk This differs from most other countries' requirements. British expats who have recently had photos taken for Indian visa applications, Chinese passport renewal, Japanese passport applications, or US visa applications will have photos with pure white backgrounds - which fall outside HMPO's preferred standard. Standard Australian photo services (AusPost, Officeworks) may produce photos that are borderline on background tone, depending on their studio lighting and background setup.
The all-online renewal process is itself a significant adjustment for British expats who may remember taking physical passport applications to post offices or embassies. Physical passport applications at British Consulates in Sydney, Melbourne or the High Commission in Canberra are no longer accepted - all UK passport renewals from Australia must be submitted through the HMPO online portal at passport.service.gov.uk.gov.uk The digital photo upload (JPEG, minimum 600×750 pixels, 50KB–10MB) goes through an automated compliance checker, but this is not the final test - HMPO manually reviews every photo, and roughly 1 in 5 online applications experience delays due to photo problems that the automated checker missed.
PassPhoto's UK passport photo service applies HMPO v47 specifications automatically when you select United Kingdom. The precise light grey background, correct 29–34mm head height within a 35×45mm frame, and the JPEG digital file at the correct size for the online portal are all applied before expert human review. With the 1-month rule in effect, same-day digital delivery is particularly valuable - you can take your photo, receive the compliant digital file the same day, and submit your application immediately to ensure the photo stays within the 1-month window.
